LOTF Final Journal

I thought that the ending was rather boring and I didn't really like it. I expected something more to happen since there are some plot twist in the novel. I thought that the novel should have included what happens after they are rescued, and the ending was rather aburpt. However it was ironic that a war outside of the island is what was what saved the boys war on the island. Ralph probably cried at the end of the novel because he was about to meet his death, his friends had been murdered and now he can finally get away from all that. I despise Jack the most because he was selfish and mean for no reason. I thought his lack of understanding the importance of trying to be rescued and the fact he was so focused on hunting was annoying. I would not recommend this novel to a friend because I think that there were too many unanswered questions left for me through the novel.

Ch. 11 Questions

1. Ralph's group decides to go to Jack's group and get Piggy's specs back.
2. The twins are "seeing Ralph for the first time" because Ralph returns to his main goal which is lighting the rescue fire to be saved. They see him return back to being civilized which is how he was in the beginning of the book.
3. The boys attempt to get Piggy's specs back and get the other boys to maintain the fire is bound to fail because they only listen to Jack. They don't follow Ralph because they believe Jack has more power but Jack will be difficult to convince to do the right thing.
4. Rodger pushes the rock off the cliff because he wants to show that he can do things for himself and the tribe.
5. The destruction of the conch is symbolically significant because it was a form of order on the island. Without it they have no order and can't maintain a civilized group.
6. For most of the boys the reason they want a chief is so they don't have to make decisions on their own. If they have a chief it is easy for them to just follow along and have someone make choices for them.
7. Do you want to be rescued at all or just stay on the island?
What are you planning to do when there is nothing to hunt?
8.      The state of the island has completely changed from when we first got here. From attempts of rescue fires are ashes and dust around the island because we could not control the fire. Most of the island is burned by the fire. Simon's hide out is filled with disgusting pig parts. Over all the island is in worse shape than it was because of the scar and the rescue fires.
Us boys are no longer the same, we've divided into 2 groups. Jack and the hunters occupy Castle Rock and Ralph and his group occupy the beach. There has been growing tension because of the deaths on the island. We are no longer one group, we actually despise each other. No matter what, whenever the 2 groups pass each other they show hatred for each other.

Ch. 10 Common Core questions

1. While first talking about Simons death, Piggy tries to convince himself and Ralph thag it was all an accident. He states "He [Simon] hadn't no business crawling like that out of the dark...it was an accident" (Golding 157). However, Ralph believes that it was murder. He admits it when he tells Piggy "that was murder" (Golding 156). Ralph feels guilty and is unsure of what to do. Piggy again tries to convince him that the death was caused by the boys being scared but Ralph argued "I wasn't scared...I was--I don't know what I was" (Golding 156). Samneric can't bear to think of this awful moment and they deny that they were present to avoid the guilt. Sam repeats "Yes. We were very tired so we left early." (Golding 158).

2. One major difference is Ralph knew the reality of what he did and he felt guilty about it. He said "Don't you understand, Piggy? The things we did-" (Golding 157). On the other hand Jack believes that it was the beast disguised as Simon. "He came-disguised. He may come again even though we gave him the head of our kill to eat. So watch; and be careful." -Jack (Golding 160). While Ralph feels remorse and guilt Jack saw it as an act of defense which is justifiable.

3. Robert replies "He didn't say. He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up" to Roger when he asked why Wilfred needs to be beaten (Golding 159). When Jack orders Wilfred to be beaten it shows his authority and power. Also when the boys obey Jack without any reason or motive shows their devotion toward their new leader.

Jack is now the chief because he has the most power. He has the ability to start the rescues fire and a majority of the boys listen to him now.

4. Rep. Michael Burgess, held up a photo of CDC chief Frieden in Africa wearing a protective suit that covered him head to toe. He compared it to the flimsy guideline that the CDC had issued for nurses and doctors here.

Opinion Editorial Piece

Do people complain too much?

Every day I hear whines or cries about the simplest things from any one to everyone. Don’t get me wrong, I am one of those people sometimes. However I think its pointless to complain about things like your parents irritating you, or this 6-7 class schedule, or having practice every day and becoming sore, or having nothing to eat when really you just don’t see anything you like. I do complain about some of these things once and awhile but I realize that I have it easy compared to a plentiful amount of kids my age.
One example I used is being irritated, mad, or fighting with a parent. I fight or get irritated with mine all the time, no doubt about it but in the end I never stay mad at them. I never can because I imagine what my would be like if I didn’t have them. I just have the thought of what orphans or foster kids go through. When I think of that I just stop my complaining and am happy I have mine around all the time.
Another thing a lot of us complain about is practice or being tired and sore to the point we wish we couldn’t feel our legs. I think we are wrong, we shouldn’t complain we are sore, we should be thankful we have a functioning body. When I am struggling sometime with something hurting or im just sore. I don’t complain I just think of those who lost an arm or leg in the military or someone with a disorder and how they feel without being able to normally walk or run like I do.
The last one I think we complain about way too much every day is not having anything to eat while we stare at a full fridge or something. When we say we are starving, there is other people on the other side of the world on the brink of death. There are kids suffering and struggling to survive. They’ll do anything for any type of food or water and we complain we can’t find anything to eat because we don’t see anything we really want.
Sometimes I think we over dramatize what is really going on and focus on the bad rather than the good. We can complain about anything bad but hardly ever notice what greater goods are going on around us. Complaining never gets you anywhere to be honest. It doesn’t help anything at all you’re basically wasting your breath for nothing, or at least that’s my point of view. For the people that complain about life when they reach any small obstacle, well reality check it could be so much worse. A majority of my generation doesn’t realize they aren't the only one struggling.

Literature Analysis #3

Prompt: Although much of the plot of each story revolves around men, The Joy Luck Club as a whole centers on the relationships between mothers and daughters. How would the book differ if the Chinese characters were fathers and sons instead?

Like a lot of mothers and daughters in reality, there were very many miscommunications shared between mothers and daughters throughout the book The Joy Luck Club. I think that many of the conflicts that these mothers and daughters had were because of the variation between their cultures, the mothers being Chinese and the daughters being American. If instead of the characters being mothers and daughters, they were fathers in sons, then the book would completely change. The arguments between a mother and her daughter is different from a father and sons for several reasons. First off, they are less influential than women. Another reason would be that men would have less conflict. Lastly, men are slightly emotional.

My first reason is that men are less prominent than women. It was June’s call to take over her mother’s legacy and fulfill her wish after Suyan’s death. June was influenced by her mother and legacy to fly to China to find her long lost sister to give them Suyan’s message. Men do not typically influence others or even have a sense of control over someone. This is why it would be a diverse book if the women were instead men.

Another reason to think why the book would change if the Chinese characters were men instead, is that men seem to have less conflict with others in general. When Waverly Jong gets overwhelmed by her mother’s constant pressure for chess in the chapter called Rules of the Game, is one example. She breaks in emotion one day with her mother and asks her why she has always tried to take credit for her accomplishments. Waverly lost passion for chess just because of her mother’s selfishness because of these conflicts.

The last reason the book the book would be different if it revolved around men is because men are not as emotional as women. They do not express or show their feelings like women tend to do. They do not have any breakdowns or go from being happy to mad or sad in seconds like women. Lena is confused from her mother’s actions and state of mind in the chapter The Voice from the Wall. Lena’s mom, Ying-Ying suffered from losing a baby, she would cry and not say much. She even claimed to see the future, which affected Lena’s life because they never interacted throughout Lena’s childhood. This barrier between them creates diversity.

In conclusion, I think this book would be different if the women were replaced by men because of three reasons. First women are more influential than men. Also men tend to have less conflict than women. And finally, men are generally less emotional. I thought this book was inspirational because it shows the readers to be grateful for the people and things in our lives because you never know when you could lose it all. It taught me it’s better to enjoy my life instead of constantly fighting because one day you can’t turn back the clock when you miss it all. It is better to solve a problem than to have words that are left unsaid.

Literature Analysis #2: The Road by Cormac Mccarthy

1. This novel is about a man and a boy, whose names are never actually given, traveling together with only each other and a cart with supplies. On their journey they meet many people like a man who tries to kidnap the boy, cannibals that have people kept in their basement to eat, and three men plus a woman who is pregnant. The boy and man begin to starve to death but fortunately find a house with enough food for them to eat. With all this traveling, the man's goal was to get to the coast and when they finally reach the beach his son gets sick. On top of that someone steals their cart. Eventually they look for the thief and get their stuff back. The man and boy go into a town and while traveling through it, the man is shot with a bow and arrow. Even though the boy attempts to help him the man dies. In the end the boy is taken by the man with the shot gun as his new family.

2. I believe the theme of this story is good versus evil. Throughout their travels the boy always ask whoever they met if they were good or bad guys. I think the author chose to write about this in a sense if showing two different types of people in the world. I think it relates to people my age meaning don't hang out with the wrong crowd. Try to follow the good influential people in your life, not someone who brings you down.

3. The man, the protagonist, is a dynamic character because he learns so much by his travels with the boy. For example, he learns to be caring when he let's Ely eat with him. The man, however, didn't show many personality traits so I would say he's a flat character.

4. I think one significant motif of this story is the quote "Keep a little fore buring; however small, however hidden." I think it functions in the work because it's basically saying keep hope and never give up. It shows despite their situations the man and boy have hope in each other and they are determined to stay alive.

5. The reason I chose this book for several reasons. First it got my attention because it was on the list we got before summer saying we need to read it by senior year. Honestly it didn't really interest me until my AVID teacher told us it is one of the most depressing books he's ever read so I decided to take a chance with it. When I first started reading, what kept me going was to find out more about their journey. It was sad and suspenseful so I has the urgent keep reading on.
A connection I would make between people or events that happen in the story is the man and boys journey to a homeless family I see out on the street holding up a sign asking for help. Both look for survival and a place to find hope for their family. I feel like a lot of parents can connect to the man in the sense of putting their child's safety first.

6. One thing I will remember from this story is the love the man has for his son. His son was his motivation to stay alive, it hit me when "he held the boy and bent to hear the labor suck of air. his hand on the thing and laddered ribs. He walked out on the beach to the edge of the light and stood with his clenched fist on top of his skull and fell to his knees sobbing in rage" because it shows the pain this man is going through. It kind of made me realize how grateful I am for everything I have because others suffer in misery and pain. I don't think I would ever relate to that type of pain like the man went through and it sucks to know some people in the world really do go through it suffering everyday.

Antigone Quick Write

If my favorite brother was not going to have an honorable burial I would be outraged. I honestly would be beyond furious with my uncle. It is not fair to bury my jerk brother and not bury my favorite, and I am not just saying that because he's my favorite. If I were in that situation I would do anything to get my brother even the simplest burial. I think that it's not fair as king to choose which one of your nephews got the honorable burial, and it's disrespect for the dead. As for my sister I couldn't care less what she did because that's on her. Yes, I would probably be upset and mad but at the same time I could understand she doesn't want to get in trouble. Although, I do think she kind of dishonored her own family by not helping. I personally wouldn't mind because if I got caught I die for honor too.

Jonathan Safran Foer Webinar Reaction Assignment

Today in class we read the exert "A Case for Eating Dogs" which was about people eating dogs a good or bad thing. In my opinion it all depends on the person and their situation. A lot of times people will tease me and my culture saying that we eat dog in the Philippines. Yes it is true I am not going to lie, I have witnessed it. I found that people in Korea eat dog also but on examiner.com it says that the dogs they eat are bred and killed humanely like any other livestock. I own a dog myself and have become a attached to it so I would never imagine myself eating it. I do think eating dog is okay sometimes in extreme cases. For example, in the Philippines they do not kill and eat these dogs for fun. The poorer people that can not afford anything else eat dog meat to survive. If that is your last source of food or you can not afford anything else and you're starving, I say go for it. If we can eat cows or pigs without a hesitation then I do not see anything wrong with eating dog meat. I wouldn't say to just go and kill your pet right now because I definitely would not do it but in extreme cases I would eat dog meat for my survival. I just do not think it is that big of a deal plus the dogs could be raised like livestock which we eat every day. The author says in the exert “For the ecologically minded it’s time to admit that dog is a realistic food for realistic environmentalist” and  I agree. I  do not think it is that big of a deal in extreme cases especially since we do it to pigs and cows every day, we just need to look beyond dogs being a companion sometimes.

Literature Analysis #1

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

1.      This story is set in Athens, Greece as Theseus, the Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta are preparing for their wedding. The character Hermia is loved by both Lysander and Demetrius but loves Lysander, while Helena loves Demetrius. Lysander and Hermia want to be married but Hermia’s father, Egeus, forces her to marry and love Demetrius instead. Despite the consequences Lysander and Hermia run away together. In hopes of Demetrius loving her back, Helena informs Demetrius of Hermia and Lysander running away. However, he doesn’t like Helena and he follows Hermia. While Lysander and Hermia run away into a forest the fairy queen, Titania, and king, Oberon fued over a boy who Titania took from Oberon. Seeking revenge Oberon orders Puck (another fairy) to squeeze a love potion into Titanias eyes which will cause her to fall in love with whatever she sees first when she wakes up. He also orders Puck to put the potion into Demetrius’s eyes when he witnesses him treating Helena badly. Unfortunately, Puck makes the mistake of putting the potion into Lysanders eyes instead of Demetrius’s. Lysander wakes up seeing Helna and falls in love with her. Helena runs tries to run from Lysander thinking that he is mocking her. The climax of this story is when Puck realizes his mistake and then later puts the potion into Demetrius eyes, causing him to fall in love with Helena. Helena believes that Lysander and Demetrius are only mocking her. When Hermia sees this, she blames Helena for stealing Lysander from her. Hermia threatens Helena but both me come to Helena’s protection, which only makes them argue between themselves. As Hermia, Helena, Demetrius, and Lysander fall asleep in the woods, Puck puts the love potion into Lysander’s eyes, declaring that in the morning everything will return to normal.

2.      I think the theme of the novel is how difficult love is and that it is far from easy. Lysander even says “The course of true love never did run smooth.” I don’t think this story is a true love story, it shows romantic elements but it shows the torments and afflictions that loved ones suffer. I see it more as a comedy where everyone loves the wrong person. Hermia loves Lysander, Helena loves Demetrius, Demetrius loves Hermia, the two men end up loving Helena and leaver Hermia alone. Also Egeus (Hermias father) wanted to force her to marry Demetrius even though she loved Lysander. It wasn’t easy for Lysander and Hermia to be together and that is why they ran away. They knew the consequences and difficulty of being together but decided to go through with anyway out of love.

3.      I chose this book because my AVID teacher recommended it to me when I asked him about which book I should read when I had my final choices. This book caught my attention because it was written by Shakesoeare. I really enjoy reading his plays/writings so I decided to take upon this one. What made me want to keep reading is just the whole love story I knew was behind it. It was funny yet loving at the same time I guess you could say.

4.      In my opinion this book can be realistic, in the sense of people falling in love with the wrong people. I honestly think it happens a lot at school with people my age, especially girls. I think a lot of girls can relate to Helena where they like someone but they have to watch him like another girl. I just don’t think many get and ending like the one in this story. It’s never personally happen to me but I see it all the time on social media and to a few friends.

5.      Shakespeare’s tone in the beginning of the story is kind of serious because Egeus doesn’t let his daughter marry Lysander. However, I think he becomes more humerous throughout the story having Puck put the potion in Lysander’s eyes to make him fall in love with Helena who think she is being mocked. Also Shakespeare writes that Titania falls in love with a donkey, which I think shows he is trying to be funny with this play.

6.      –“Love can transpose to form and dignity: Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind and therefore is wing’d Cupid painted blind” This helped me find the theme a little bit more because it is describing how love can blind you.

-“The raging rocks and shivering shocks shall break the locks of prison gates” This is an example of imagery, I think it paints a picture inside readers head how powerful a storm can be

-“And then the moon, like a silver bow New bent in heaven, shall behold the night of our solemnities” This is an example of a simile because it compares the moon to a silver bow and it also makes up a different picture of the moon in readers heads.

-“How now, my love! Why is your cheek so pale? How chance the roses there do fade so fast?” I think this is a great metaphor comparing the color of roses to her cheek because it helps the readers picture Hermia’s look.

-“Therefore the moon, the governess of floods, pale in her anger, washes away all the air.” This shows anger differently by comparing it to floods and the moon.

-“Belike for want of rain, which I could well between them from the tempest of my eyes” I think this is a great way to show readers how much Hermia wanted to cry. It shows her emotions and tears.

-“I’ll speakin a monstrous little voice” I chose this because it was simply anexample of a hyperbole, exaggerating the tone of voice

-“But earthlier happy is the rose distilled” I chose this as a metaphor describing how happy is a rose distilled meaning happiness is purifying.

-“O that your frowns would teach my smiles such skill!” this is an example of personification giving frowns the power to “teach”

-“Than that which withering on the virgin thorn grows, lives and dies in single blessedness” I think that Theseus is comparing being a virgin to a flower blossom, it eventually withers and dies on a rosebush.

Characterization

1.      Indirect Characterization:

-“Be advised, fair maid. To you your father should be as a god, one that composed your beauties; yea and one to whom you are but as a form in wax by him imprinted and within his power to leave the figure or disfigure it. Demetrius is a worthy gentleman” Theseus talks about Demetrius and Egeus to Hermia.

-“The villain is much lighter heeled than I. I followed fast but faster he did fly” Lysander describes Demetrius

Direct Characterization:

-“I am, my lord, as well derived as he, as well possessed; my love is more than his; My fortunes every way as fairly ranked (If not with vantage) as Demetrius” Lysander describes himself to Egeus.

-“Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour Draws on apace; four happy days bring in Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow This old moon wanes! she lingers my desires” Theseus describes himself by showing how happy his is about his marriage

2.      Yes Shakespeare’s syntax and diction changes between characters. For example when Theseus or Egeus is speaking he has more of a serious tone and words he uses. And when Puck is speaking the tone is funny and loose.

3.      The protagonist, Puck is both static and flat. He doesn’t really change throughout the play and he only deals with one thing, which is putting the potion into Lysander and Titania’s eyes.

4.      After reading this I feel as if I had only read a character or characters I should say. I didn’t really feel like I met any one of them because I barely got any descriptions about each one and they were kind of vague. I didn’t know much about them just who they were in love with. I do however, think that it has much to do with the fact it is a play so I felt I was pretty much just reading the script and not a book or story.

Enduring Memory: I think something I would remember out of this play the most is the quote ““Love can transpose to form and dignity: Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind and therefore is wing’d Cupid painted blind” because I think it describes love perfectly plus it goes with the theme. I think love blinds people sometimes from whats really important. I changes people and they do things like running away to be with whomever they love. They don’t always realize what is in front of them, people (in my opinion) sometimes just like the thought of feeling they are in love.

Journal #1

To be a hero, to me, means being courageous and fighting for what you believe in. Not all heroes are hidden behind a mask and cape. Ones hero could be a doctor, firefighter, or even someone who stands up to a bully for them. In both movies and book there are heroes and villains. But what about the people in the real world who's battles aren't against villains or evil machines to save the town or world. They might not even have special powers, for example, a cancer survivor. I could consider them heroes for battling it out with this disease a lot of us don't know much about or can relate to. Military parents are huge heroes but their kids are too. They struggle because they don't always have their mom or dad around like a majority of us do. Firefighters and doctors save lives every day but don't get the recognition for it like heroes in the movies. To me being a hero isn't about capes, tights, and powers, it is about courageously dealing with whatever you "evil villain" is because there are plenty of heroes among us. Most of the time we just don't see them.
