Literature Analysis #3

Prompt: Although much of the plot of each story revolves around men, The Joy Luck Club as a whole centers on the relationships between mothers and daughters. How would the book differ if the Chinese characters were fathers and sons instead?

Like a lot of mothers and daughters in reality, there were very many miscommunications shared between mothers and daughters throughout the book The Joy Luck Club. I think that many of the conflicts that these mothers and daughters had were because of the variation between their cultures, the mothers being Chinese and the daughters being American. If instead of the characters being mothers and daughters, they were fathers in sons, then the book would completely change. The arguments between a mother and her daughter is different from a father and sons for several reasons. First off, they are less influential than women. Another reason would be that men would have less conflict. Lastly, men are slightly emotional.

My first reason is that men are less prominent than women. It was June’s call to take over her mother’s legacy and fulfill her wish after Suyan’s death. June was influenced by her mother and legacy to fly to China to find her long lost sister to give them Suyan’s message. Men do not typically influence others or even have a sense of control over someone. This is why it would be a diverse book if the women were instead men.

Another reason to think why the book would change if the Chinese characters were men instead, is that men seem to have less conflict with others in general. When Waverly Jong gets overwhelmed by her mother’s constant pressure for chess in the chapter called Rules of the Game, is one example. She breaks in emotion one day with her mother and asks her why she has always tried to take credit for her accomplishments. Waverly lost passion for chess just because of her mother’s selfishness because of these conflicts.

The last reason the book the book would be different if it revolved around men is because men are not as emotional as women. They do not express or show their feelings like women tend to do. They do not have any breakdowns or go from being happy to mad or sad in seconds like women. Lena is confused from her mother’s actions and state of mind in the chapter The Voice from the Wall. Lena’s mom, Ying-Ying suffered from losing a baby, she would cry and not say much. She even claimed to see the future, which affected Lena’s life because they never interacted throughout Lena’s childhood. This barrier between them creates diversity.

In conclusion, I think this book would be different if the women were replaced by men because of three reasons. First women are more influential than men. Also men tend to have less conflict than women. And finally, men are generally less emotional. I thought this book was inspirational because it shows the readers to be grateful for the people and things in our lives because you never know when you could lose it all. It taught me it’s better to enjoy my life instead of constantly fighting because one day you can’t turn back the clock when you miss it all. It is better to solve a problem than to have words that are left unsaid.

Literature Analysis #2: The Road by Cormac Mccarthy

1. This novel is about a man and a boy, whose names are never actually given, traveling together with only each other and a cart with supplies. On their journey they meet many people like a man who tries to kidnap the boy, cannibals that have people kept in their basement to eat, and three men plus a woman who is pregnant. The boy and man begin to starve to death but fortunately find a house with enough food for them to eat. With all this traveling, the man's goal was to get to the coast and when they finally reach the beach his son gets sick. On top of that someone steals their cart. Eventually they look for the thief and get their stuff back. The man and boy go into a town and while traveling through it, the man is shot with a bow and arrow. Even though the boy attempts to help him the man dies. In the end the boy is taken by the man with the shot gun as his new family.

2. I believe the theme of this story is good versus evil. Throughout their travels the boy always ask whoever they met if they were good or bad guys. I think the author chose to write about this in a sense if showing two different types of people in the world. I think it relates to people my age meaning don't hang out with the wrong crowd. Try to follow the good influential people in your life, not someone who brings you down.

3. The man, the protagonist, is a dynamic character because he learns so much by his travels with the boy. For example, he learns to be caring when he let's Ely eat with him. The man, however, didn't show many personality traits so I would say he's a flat character.

4. I think one significant motif of this story is the quote "Keep a little fore buring; however small, however hidden." I think it functions in the work because it's basically saying keep hope and never give up. It shows despite their situations the man and boy have hope in each other and they are determined to stay alive.

5. The reason I chose this book for several reasons. First it got my attention because it was on the list we got before summer saying we need to read it by senior year. Honestly it didn't really interest me until my AVID teacher told us it is one of the most depressing books he's ever read so I decided to take a chance with it. When I first started reading, what kept me going was to find out more about their journey. It was sad and suspenseful so I has the urgent keep reading on.
A connection I would make between people or events that happen in the story is the man and boys journey to a homeless family I see out on the street holding up a sign asking for help. Both look for survival and a place to find hope for their family. I feel like a lot of parents can connect to the man in the sense of putting their child's safety first.

6. One thing I will remember from this story is the love the man has for his son. His son was his motivation to stay alive, it hit me when "he held the boy and bent to hear the labor suck of air. his hand on the thing and laddered ribs. He walked out on the beach to the edge of the light and stood with his clenched fist on top of his skull and fell to his knees sobbing in rage" because it shows the pain this man is going through. It kind of made me realize how grateful I am for everything I have because others suffer in misery and pain. I don't think I would ever relate to that type of pain like the man went through and it sucks to know some people in the world really do go through it suffering everyday.

Antigone Quick Write

If my favorite brother was not going to have an honorable burial I would be outraged. I honestly would be beyond furious with my uncle. It is not fair to bury my jerk brother and not bury my favorite, and I am not just saying that because he's my favorite. If I were in that situation I would do anything to get my brother even the simplest burial. I think that it's not fair as king to choose which one of your nephews got the honorable burial, and it's disrespect for the dead. As for my sister I couldn't care less what she did because that's on her. Yes, I would probably be upset and mad but at the same time I could understand she doesn't want to get in trouble. Although, I do think she kind of dishonored her own family by not helping. I personally wouldn't mind because if I got caught I die for honor too.

Jonathan Safran Foer Webinar Reaction Assignment

Today in class we read the exert "A Case for Eating Dogs" which was about people eating dogs a good or bad thing. In my opinion it all depends on the person and their situation. A lot of times people will tease me and my culture saying that we eat dog in the Philippines. Yes it is true I am not going to lie, I have witnessed it. I found that people in Korea eat dog also but on examiner.com it says that the dogs they eat are bred and killed humanely like any other livestock. I own a dog myself and have become a attached to it so I would never imagine myself eating it. I do think eating dog is okay sometimes in extreme cases. For example, in the Philippines they do not kill and eat these dogs for fun. The poorer people that can not afford anything else eat dog meat to survive. If that is your last source of food or you can not afford anything else and you're starving, I say go for it. If we can eat cows or pigs without a hesitation then I do not see anything wrong with eating dog meat. I wouldn't say to just go and kill your pet right now because I definitely would not do it but in extreme cases I would eat dog meat for my survival. I just do not think it is that big of a deal plus the dogs could be raised like livestock which we eat every day. The author says in the exert “For the ecologically minded it’s time to admit that dog is a realistic food for realistic environmentalist” and  I agree. I  do not think it is that big of a deal in extreme cases especially since we do it to pigs and cows every day, we just need to look beyond dogs being a companion sometimes.
